By Roseline Okakah

The Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Ondo State chapter, began its 2025 Press Week celebration with a thanksgiving service held at the Favoured Generation Prophetic Mission in Akure on Sunday.

Speaking at the service, the State Chairperson of NAWOJ, Comrade Tola Gbadamosi, expressed gratitude to God for preserving the lives and well-being of all women journalists in the state, especially amid recent challenges.

“I feel so great about this thanksgiving because the Bible says that in everything we should give thanks. In the midst of the storms in Ondo State, none of my members was missing, and their families are safe and well. This thanksgiving is to acknowledge God’s protection and to kick-start the week-long celebration,” she said.

Gbadamosi highlighted the line-up of activities for the week, including a novelty football match with female lawyers on Tuesday; a collaborative visit to the Botanical Garden at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), on Wednesday, where female journalists will interact with female engineers; and an investiture ceremony followed by a dinner and awards night on Thursday while the Jumat service will be held at the Obaile Central mosque ,Oba Ile.

She emphasised the importance of unity among NAWOJ members, urging them to remain focused and supportive of one another.

“Unity is paramount in NAWOJ. I urge my members to be united in all we do and to continue fraternising and supporting each other,” she added.

Also present at the service was the State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ondo State Council, Prince Leke Adegbite, who commended NAWOJ for reviving the Press Week celebration after several years.

“NAWOJ is our women’s wing and we love them. This is the first Press Week they are celebrating in many years, and we are proud of their efforts in promoting women-related issues. They can always count on the NUJ’s support,” he said.

Chairperson of the Press Week Planning Committee, Mrs Folukemi Amodu, also thanked God for the gift of life and for the unity among NAWOJ members.

“We have not lost anything, and that is why we are giving thanks. Our members came out en masse for the service, and we encourage their participation throughout the week.”

The State Commandant of the Amotekun Corps, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, also joined the celebration, appreciating NAWOJ and NUJ for their continuous support of security efforts in the state.

The host pastor, Temidayo Julius of Favoured Generation Prophetic Mission, delivered a sermon titled Unlimited Praise, encouraging attendees to give unending praise to God for His sacrifice and sustenance.
