Muslim Women Make History with Commissioning of First Orphanage in Akure Amidst Jubilation

In a landmark moment for the Akure Muslim community, the first Muslim-owned crèche and orphanage in the city—Bright Futures Home—was commissioned on Saturday amid jubilation, cultural fanfare, and heartfelt accolades.

The colourful ceremony, held in the heart of the Ondo State capital, brought together an eclectic mix of dignitaries from political, religious, and traditional institutions across Ondo and neighbouring Ekiti State, marking a significant milestone in community-led childcare and humanitarian service.

The multi-million Naira initiative, established by the Akure Community Muslim Women, drew commendations for its noble intent to provide care, education, and protection for vulnerable children, particularly within the Muslim community.

Representing Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, Alhaji Hamidu Takuro, a commissioner-designate, praised the project and assured the women of the state government’s commitment to financially support the home.

Senator Niyi Adegbonmire, SAN, who represents Ondo Central Senatorial District, stunned attendees with a remarkable pledge to sponsor five children from the home—from nursery through to university level—underscoring his support for the education and welfare of less privileged children.

In similar spirit, Barrister D. I. Kekemeke, Chairman of the Nigerian Postal Service and a special guest at the event, promised to regularly provide essential supplies to the home, describing it as part of his personal mission to uplift the lives of orphans and vulnerable children.

Ayo Olawande, Minister of Youth, also committed to installing solar-powered streetlights around the home, a move aimed at ensuring safety and improved accessibility.

The Secretary to the Ekiti State Government, Alhaja (Prof.) Habibat Adubiaro, who attended alongside her husband, Alhaji Engineer Sulaiman Adubiaro, offered warm congratulations to the Akure Muslim women, describing their achievement as “a shining example of faith-driven community service.” The couple also made a generous financial donation to support the project.

Speaking passionately at the event, Alhaja Dr. Munirat Ogunlayi, one of the leading initiators of the project, expressed gratitude to all individuals and organisations who contributed to the realisation of the home.

“This home is more than just a building—it is a symbol of hope and compassion, built to uplift our children and support the community,” she said. “We are calling on government agencies, philanthropists, and well-meaning Nigerians to come on board and expand this vision.”

The Iya Adinni of Akure Kingdom, Alhaja Hon. F. I. Gidado, also lent her voice, appreciating donors for their unwavering support. In a humorous yet earnest appeal, she urged the state government to sustain its backing: “To all our doctors, please—our Oliver Twist wants more.”

The ceremony also had a royal touch, with the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, Odundun II, in attendance. The monarch, accompanied by other traditional rulers, lent royal endorsement to the home, further affirming its significance in the cultural and social fabric of the community.

One of the event’s most emotional moments was the presentation of awards of appreciation and recognition by the Grand Imam of Akure, His Eminence, Alhaji Sheikh (Dr.) Abdul-Hakeem Yayi-Akorede, to outstanding contributors whose dedication helped transform the dream into reality.

The commissioning of Bright Futures Home is more than a historic first—it is a testament to the power of vision, faith, and community-driven resolve. For the Akure Muslim women behind the initiative, it is a proud reminder that with unity and purpose, no dream is beyond reach.
