NUJ Commends Ondo Govt’s Road Projects, Seeks Faster Completion of Ongoing Works

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ondo State Council, has commended the Ondo State Government for ongoing road construction projects across the state, while expressing concern over the slow pace of work on some key highways and calling for their speedy completion.

The position was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the union’s monthly congress held on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at the NUJ Press Centre, Pen Crescent, Alagbaka, Akure.
The congress, presided over by the State Chairman, Prince Leke Adegbite, attracted members from all chapels of the union, who deliberated on issues bordering on politics, the economy, infrastructure, security, the environment and the welfare of members.

The union specifically acknowledged ongoing road construction by the state government but urged contractors handling the Akungba-Ikare Akoko Road, Okitipupa-Igbokoda Road and Akure-Idanre Road to intensify efforts to ensure their timely completion.

The congress also described the ongoing construction of the flyover on Oba Adesida Road, Akure, as a laudable project. However, it appealed to the state government to make alternative routes more motorable, particularly the Arakale Road, to ease traffic congestion caused by the diversion of vehicles during the construction period.

On federal road infrastructure, the journalists commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for the ongoing dualisation of the Ilesa-Akure-Owo-Benin Road, as well as the reconstruction of the Akure-Ado Ekiti and Akure-Ondo-Ore roads. They, however, expressed deep concern over the deteriorating condition of federal roads serving Ondo North, especially in the Akoko axis.

The congress called on federal lawmakers and political appointees from the area to facilitate the urgent rehabilitation of the Ikare-Ogbagi-Irun Akoko-Ado Ekiti Road and the Owo-Ipele-Isua Akoko-Kabba Road to improve transportation and economic activities.
On environmental issues, the union described the recent incidents of flooding in parts of the state as unfortunate and urged both the state and local governments to adopt proactive measures, including regular drainage maintenance and flood prevention strategies, rather than responding only after disasters occur.

The congress also applauded the leadership of the Ondo State NUJ under Prince Adegbite for its efforts in protecting members’ interests and the ongoing beautification of the Press Centre. It further commended the council for its consistent support for the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) and the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) in organising programmes such as children’s parties and sporting competitions.

The union equally lauded the noticeable improvements at the Ondo State Radiovision Corporation (OSRC) Media Group and appealed to the state government to facilitate the inclusion of the state-owned television station on cable networks to enhance service delivery and create better career opportunities for its workforce.

The congress observed a minute’s silence in honour of the late veteran journalist, Sir Ademola Adetula, a former NUJ State Officer and immediate past Managing Director of The Hope newspaper, who recently passed away. Members described him as one of the state’s finest journalists and prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul and the fortitude for his family to bear the loss.

The communiqué was signed by the State Secretary, Olaoluwa Meshack, on behalf of the Communiqué Drafting Committee comprising Hosea Olusegun, Damilola Isaiah and Olorunferanmi Odofin.
