IWD: FOMWAN advocates special focus on welfare of women
As this year’s International Women Day is celebrated across the globe, the Federation of Muslim Women Association in Nigeria (FOMWAN) has called on government at all levels to give special attention to the welfare of women and children with a view to appreciating their cardinal roles in shaping the world.
FOMWAN acknowledged the multi tasking roles and religious obligations of women in ensuring a healthy home and meaningful contribution towards national development.
FOMWAN, in a statement signed by the National Amirah Hajia Rafiah Idowu Sanni, in commemorating this year’s edition of International Women Day, celebrated women folk across the globe for their significant contributions to nation building.
The statement reads in parts: “The Association salutes women doggedness and envisions a world where women are totally empowered to be role models in making positive impact on the society.
“The Association envisions a world where women are totally empowered to be role models in making positive impact on the society, with the mission of propagating Islam through Da’wah,(Islamic propagation, establishment of educational institutions, improve the socio economic status of women, youth and children through training, provision of qualitative education, health and human services, micro enterprise scheme and advocacy to advance the course of women”.
FOMWAN celebrated Women Achievers that have contributed meaningfully as role models towards advancement of increase voice for women leadership and total empowerment of women and children.
“These women include the wives of our noble the Prophet, Hadijat Aisha and Ummu Salamah who were great scholars and pillars to their family and their generation and recently our own Alhaja Lateefah Okunnu, Late Aisha Lemu, Late Dora Akunyili among other women of substance that have excelled in their different field of endeavours”.
FOMWAN described this year’s theme “INSPIRE INCLUSION”, as very timely and relevant in view of current women challenges women are facing.
“This will further recognise impact of women contribution to the society, reflects on the collective efforts of who actually care about human rights, equity and inspiration of understanding and value women’s inclusion for sense of belonging, relevance and empowerment as enjoined the Holy Qur’an.
“As an umbrella body of all Muslim women Associations, FOMWAN reiterates the fact that Islam eradicated the ignorant period of killing, sadness over female child, saving the lives of female child has given them dignity and honour that Islam accords women till date.
“This confirms the importance of women in Islam and total liberation from the shackles of hatred, discrimination on gender basis
Therefore, FOMWAN advocates for more commitments on proper child upbringing as future leaders of the nation”.
Meanwhile, the Association use the celebration of International Women Day to condemn the high rate of insecurity where women and children are subjects of dehumanization and killings.
The Association called on government at all levels and security agencies to improve in the security architecture of the country to ensure adequate protection of women and children and other venerable groups.
FOMWAN advocated for price control to assist in reducing inflation and staggering prices of food stuff especially as this year’s Ramadan fasting approaches.
The Association urged the Federal Government to ensure release of more foodstuff to the nation and ensure proper monitoring and service delivery for inclusiveness.
“In the spirit of the forthcoming holy month, we appeal to traders to fear Almighty Allah in their sales as mentioned in Quran 83: verses 1-8.
“As the first school of every child, FOMWAN urge Muslim women to appreciate and implement their religious roles and responsibilities with humbleness and supports the world spiritually”.
