MOB assures passage of 35% affirmative action
…as Falana, Ilawole, Odusola , Momoh bag NCWS National awards
The Majority Leader of the National Assembly, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, popularly called MOB has assured Nigerian Women that the 35% affirmative action bill will be passed into law when re- presented for consideration.
Bamidele gave the assurance while reacting on the award presented to him by the National Council for Women Society (NCWS), Nigeria at the 2024 Biennial Convention held in Abuja at the weekend.
His words: ” If we do this, sincerely we are not doing you a favour. We are only trying to comply with global international best practices.
” We are only trying to say Nigeria is also following in the path of good governance which is what is happening all over the civilized and advanced World and democracies.
He reminded the delegates that the Assembly got close to achieving it 3 years ago, but was truncated due to technical challenges.
“He assured that within one week, “we will be on the other vehicle. If we get the other paper within the first one week, the ministry will immediately refer it to the constitution review committee because it’s a constitutional matter.” He affirmed.
Bamidele described the bill as not like any other bill, observing that the chairman of the constitution review committee, Zenator Barao Jubril from Kano who is the Deputy President of the Senate will be hinted about it.
“As I leave here today, I promise you, I will also go to him to let him know that we have an urgent request and that we’ve been on it 3 years ago, that means we have less work to do but join us in doing that work.
He charged women to speak with one another and every senator representing their constituencies which he said are their husbands to let them know that they are close to making this work in the 9th Assembly and to be part of those who will make it work at the 10th Assembly.
He however assured of doing their best so that Nigeria can join the committee of civilized nations around the world.
In an interview with the media, the Special Adviser to the Ondo state Governor on Gender, Chief Olamide Falana who was also an award recipient, assured on Ondo state government’s commitment to uplift women and ensure they are better empowered and able to do better as women to succeed in any sphere of life that they find themselves.
Falana showered encomiums on the Governor, Hon Lucky Aiyedatiwa for given her the space to act and also impact on the women and girls across the state. She thanked the state council of NCWS for nominating her and the national body of NCWS for the recognition.
She believed that the council delegates will replicate what they have learnt to others to make the state a better one.
The the two day event featured among others; presentation of lectures on the theme for the year, on malaria, awareness creation on Hepatitis, testing and vaccination of interested delegates and an arena for exhibition while the Abuja cultural groups entertained the participants.
Awards were presented to notable Nigerians among which included; the Ondo state President of NCWS, Bishop Odusola Oluwakemi, Chief Olamide Falana, Dr. Olawunmi J. Olawole wife of the Olukare of Ikare, Olori Folashade Iyabo Momoh.
