StandUp for Women Society (SWS), has called on media establishments to have passion and report women-related issues for their voices to be heard and addressed appropriately.
The Ondo state Chairperson of the Association, Lib. Alhaja Rafa Momoh made the appeal when she led members of the associations on advocacy visits to some media establishments ahead of its Southwest Zone leadership training programme and Investiture of the state new executives.
The event is billed to hold on Friday, November 10th 2023 in Akure, the Ondo state capital.
The association visited the Owena Press, publishers of The Hope titles, the Nigeria Television Authority NTA , the Federal Radio Corporation , Positive FM and the palace of the Deji of Akure.
Speaking at The Hope, the state Chairperson, , Alhaja Rafat Abiodun Momoh commended the media outfit for its commitment to human development and the society at large.
She described the The Hope interest in women issue as first of its kind and pointed to some of its news coverage relating to the inhumanity of women following the ongoing case of a woman who received several machete cuts from her husband in Owo among others.
Momoh said her association, is a networking forum created as an umbrella to promote women affairs and influence the minds, actions and practices of the general public at various government levels to support and ensure fair share responsibilities to women in the society.
She noted that the group is aimed at enhancing and encouraging women to have self-confidence, freedom of choice; freedom from violence and attack and ensuring that no woman or girl is left behind.
Momoh, however, seeks the continued support of the media in women activities, as she promised to maintain robust relationship with the media.
Momoh, who observed that crime is a product of bad parenting and the erosion of societal values, noted that her organisation is working to protect the interest of women across the state.
She called on traditional rulers to work with parents to revive societal values and virtues of the Nigeria culture.
In his reaction, the Chairman/Editor-in-Chief of Owena Press Limited, Sir Ademola Adetula described women as the backbone of the society, who can never be neglected because everybody is related to a woman in one way or the other, either as a mother or wife.
He said every woman needs to be treated with utmost respect adding that without the pivotal role of a woman in a family, which is the basic unit of a society, the family will be in crisis.
“Once there is crisis in the family, the society will experience all the evils we are seeing today, prominent among which are drug abuse and prostitution,” he said.
Adetila who observed the crucial roles media play in societal development, assured the society of maximum cooperation between both organisations.
The Media administrator expressed worry over the growing abuse of women in the society, as he assured that Owena Press Limited would continue to support the Stand Up for Women Society in their quest to protect women as he stated, that The Hope is in a better position to project their image and the image of similar organisations in the state, in line with its social responsibility functions.
