Breast/cervical cancer: NAWOJ screens 100 women in Ondo as NUJ sets to partner on postrate cancer

As part of her effort to ensure women gets the necessary health care for healthy living, Ondo state Chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists NAWOJ has screen a total of 100 woman for breast and cervical cancer.


The screening facilitated by the 100 Club, a non governmental organisation with the support of Quitas Health and supported by the Friends of Wale Akinterinwa was conducted on Saturday July 1st 2023 at the Oke Ijebu Primary Health Care center in Akure, the Ondo state capital.


The team leader of the screening crew Dr. Wale Ogunlana Adviced women to always do yearly regular checkup for early detection so that they can extend their motality rate from 54 to above 70 years old.


Describing breast and cervical cancer as two most deadly diseases amongst women, Ogunlana said could be treated if detected early.


Dr Ogunlana reeled out many causes of cervical cancer, ranging form sexually transmitted diseases, multiple sex partners and smoking among several others.


Women were encouraged to educate other women saying that it is better to get it treated at the early stage than allowing it become full blown which is very hard to treat.


The leader of the technical team on ground. Dr. Adewumi Babatunde sensitized the women on the processes of the screening and test, he said that they would be tested with their Blood Pressure, Breast and cervical screening


He said women should take full utilization of the opportunity given to them noting that the value of what has being brought should be cherished because the start up treatment for a diagnonised person is from fifty thousand naira N50,000.


Earlier, while playing host to the medical team, the state chairman of NUJ, Prince Leke Adgbite appreciated the organisations for coming to perform test for women journalists describing it as the beginning of partnership which he will see how the men can come in.


Adegbite hinted that the Union organises a quarterly medical outreach for members, because journalists do not have time for themselves.


Responding, Agboola Oluwasola Said the men could be screened for prostate cancer as she stated that every man above 40years needs to be screened saying that the organisation is ever ready to deploy it’s team if the plan is considered.


” Men also need to be discussing that because men are the least conscious, Prostrate cancer in men comes as early as 30years , ” she stated.


The state Chairperson of NAWOJ, Comrade Tola Gbadamosi in an interview emphasized the need for women to take care of their health despite their tight duty schedules.

This, she said led to setting aside a day for the Cervical Cancer test and Cryotherapy for women journalists in the state.


According to her, the partnership is important to cater for women’s health to ensure women are given maximum check up calling on women to always check their health status regularly.


Speaking on the development, Representative of the Friends of Wale Akinterinwa, Barr. Tunde Ogundare said his group decided to support Ondo NAWOJ on health screening programme because they hold integral part of the world and considering their nature of job.


Ogundare noted that the group identified with their geneuity and wants to encourage them to pay more attention to their health because women he described them as salt of the world.


He assured the continuous support of the friends of Akinterinwa on ideas like this to ensure that women live up to expectations at all times.


The Beneficiaries of the screening and test applauded the leadership of NAWOJ and the partnering organisations which they said were very commendable
