Ondo NUJ Gets New Executives, Adegbite Returns as Chairman

By Rosline Okakah

The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ondo State Council, has inaugurated a new set of executives to steer the affairs of the union for the next three years.

Prince Leke Adegbite, who previously served as chairman, was returned unopposed for a second term.

Speaking during the inauguration, Adegbite expressed gratitude to members of the union for their continued trust and support.

“I appreciate God for the opportunity to serve my people over the last three years, together with my team. I also appreciate all our members, all the journalists in Ondo State, for their support and their belief in us, in our capacity, and in our ability to deliver.”

“We are not the most brilliant among the journalists in Ondo State, but in their own wisdom, they feel that we should have a smooth transition. We have many people who are qualified to contest, but they said they would support us, and we appreciate them. We promise that we will not disappoint them,” Adegbite said.

Speaking at the event, Chief Press Secretary to the Ondo State Governor, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, praised Adegbite’s leadership and urged the new executives to maintain professionalism.

“My advice to the new NUJ, Ondo State Council, led by Prince Adegbite, is to continue to tread the path of professionalism. In the last three years that Prince Adegbite has been chairman of the NUJ, we have seen a rise in the protection of the ethics of the journalism profession, and I want to believe that his second term in office will also continue on that path,” Adeniyan said.

The Ondo State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Olapade Adeniji, encouraged the new leadership to remain the “voice of the voiceless” and speak up for the masses, especially in critical times.

Chairman of NUJ chairmen in the Southwest, Ademola Babalola, described Adegbite as a trustworthy leader, wishing him and the new executives a successful tenure.

General Manager of Positive FM, Mrs Olubunmi Olalere, reminded the union that unionism is not a jamboree and urged them to impact lives and leave a legacy that reflects true leadership.

Also lending his voice, Chairman of Owena Press Limited, Mr Kayode Fasua, addressed the need to distinguish professional journalists from bloggers.

He urged the union to protect the integrity of the profession and also to work on expanding the union’s premises.

The newly inaugurated executives include Mr Meshack Olaoluwa as the State General Secretary, Miss Oluwole Precious as the State Assistant General Secretary, and Mrs Maria Famakinwa as the State Treasurer.
