Ondo FOMWAN frees inmates from correctional homes

Ondo FOMWAN frees inmates from correctional homes

The Ondo state chapter of the Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria FOMWAN, has secured the bail of two inmates from the Olokuta correctional home in Akure.

The Association is also processing the release of another nursing mother from the women correctional home in Ondo town.

The two men who have gained freedom and have reunited with their families are Abdulwasiu Yahyah and Idris Muhammed.

Yahyah was fined N50,000 while Muhammed was to pay N 100,000 as fines for the crime they have committed.

The State Amirah, Alhaja Medinat Omikunle presented the sum of N150,000 to the Muslim Chaplain officer, Mr Kazeem Badmus and pleaded that the association be informed when the processes are completed for the release of the inmates.

Omikunle, who led her team on visitation to the correctional homes during the world hijab day said the visitation was to make inmates feel the impact of Islam, and advised them to stay firm with their faith and religion and always remember the word of God in the holy Quran.

The Chairman of the Humanitarian and Community Development Committee, Alhaja Rafat Momoh who was in the team, told the inmates that God hid them to reflect in their lives and how to spend the rest of their lives in reforming and rehabilitating them back to the society.She concluded with commendation of the staff on their efforts in reformation, rehabilitation and reintegration of the inmates into the Society.

The Correctional home CA, Mr Charles Oluwole appreciated FOMWAN for their gesture and called on relevant organisations to come up and help the inmates in whatever form they could assist.

The inmates Muslim Chapline, Kazeem Badmus called for more assistance for the Muslim inmates which he said are about 450 from a total number of 950 inmates.

He stated that there are many other simple offences that could be treated out of correctional homes pointing particularly to the case of an 18-Seater bus occupants who have been forgotten at the correctional homes for no just course.

“Relevant organisation should meet with the Attorney-General to grant Amnesty for such inmates,” he stated.

It would be recalled also that FOMWAN has commenced the payment of the sum of N235,000 fine of a 20 years old nursing mother, Olanusi Favour at the Ondo prison.

So far, the sum of N150,000 has been paid remaining N85,000 which when completed will also make her a free lady in the society.
According to report, Favour who is now Aminat having converted to a Muslim following the show of love by FOMWAN never knew that she was pregnant before her detention and had to deliver at the prison
