Don advises on sustainability as Glow 99.1FM begins operation in Akure

 

A university don has called for the need to ensure the sustainability of Glow 99.1fm, a new broadcasting station commissioned to begin operation in Akure.

An Associate Professor and Head of Department of Mass Communication at the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Dr. Gbenga Abimbola gave the advise while delivering his keynote address yesterday at the official commisioning of the broadcast station at No. 1, Effon Alaye Street (Former Gani Fawehinmi building), Ijapo Estate, Akure, , Ondo state capital.

 

Dr Abimbola who spoke on “Sustaining a radio station in times of economic hardship”, urged the station management to make their operation unique in providing better services to the people.

He said the city has been saturated, but that the station will thrive if it could maintain its audience by providing a unique selling point of satisfaction.

Dr Abimbola said the management should invest on the maintenance and welfare of its staff and to avoid any form of censorship but allow them take decisions.

Abimbola who highlighted some challenges like operational cost in terms of power supply and salary payment among many others said management should prepare to work and invest for the next three years to retain its audience before expecting any profit .

“Look for a highest quality of patronage and how to sustain it this high time,” he advised.

In their remarks, the Deji of Akure, Oba Dr. Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi and Osemawe of Ondo Kingdom, Oba Dr. Victor Kiladejo, expressed their happiness and blessed the station with prayers.

Also, Founder of Prayer Center Church of God, Prophet Samson Oluwamodede who spoke with journalists, advised staff of the station on having ownership spirit towards strengthening and sustaining the station for the benefit of all.

Earlier in his welcome speech, the station Chairman, Dr Ezekiel Kayode Akande said the station is established to provide excellent broadcasting in terms of information, education and entertainment.

“The station is poised to hit the airwaves with interesting programming, as experienced broadcasters would be engaged to man the station”, he stated.

The station which has commenced test transmission last week to commemorate the World Radio Day, is currently headed by Ace Broadcaster and former Director of Programmes, Ondo State Radiovision Corporation (OSRC), Alhaji Ismail Akinkunmi Ishaq.

Highlights of the event was the formal commissioning of the station by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II who was represented by Oba Adekunle Adebowale, Agbolu of Agbaje Ife.

In attendance at the ceremony were; the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, Odundun II; Osemawe of Ondo, Oba Victor Kiladejo, Chief Imam of Akure, Sheikh AbdulHakeem Yayi-Akorede and Founder of Prayer Center Church of God, Prophet Samson Oluwamodede among many others.
