Criticise constructively to restructure Nigeria – Uzodinma tasks Journalists
Professional journalists in Nigeria have been urged to critically but constructively scrutinise those in authority, particularly politicians and stakeholders, in relation to their promises for the nation’s development.
Imo State Governor, Mr. Hope Uzodinma, made this call while declaring open the 8th Triennial National Delegate Conference of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) held in Owerri, the Imo State capital.
Uzodinma expressed disappointment over the activities of uncertified online platforms that publish unverified information, raising tension and destabilising society.
He noted that journalists and other professionals have pivotal roles in transforming Nigeria into a better nation.
However, he decried the harmful impact of uncertified online platforms, which disseminate unverified information, leading to societal unrest.
The governor, while acknowledging the contributions of journalists towards national development, urged the leadership of the NUJ to sanitise the profession.
He assured them of his administration’s continued support to ensure they thrive.
In his remarks, the Minister of Information and Orientation, Mr. Mohammed Idris, represented by Dr. Suleiman Haruna, called on journalists to focus on investigative reporting while maintaining objectivity in their professional duties.
Earlier, the NUJ President, Dr. Chris Isiguzo, commended Nigerian journalists for their commitment to nation-building and assured them of a transparent and fair selection process in electing new leaders for the profession.
A highlight of the opening ceremony was the decoration of Governor Hope Uzodinma as the Grand Patron of the Nigeria Union of Journalists.
The event was attended by journalists from all 36 states of the federation, including Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.
