NAS Ondo/Ekiti Deck Sensitizes Students on Human Rights in Celebration of Human Rights Day
In commemoration of Human Rights Day, the National Association of SeaDogs (NAS), Ondo and Ekiti States Chapter (El-Paso SSO Deck), organized an enlightening sensitization program at United Christ Apostolic Church High School, Aule Akure. The event aimed to educate students about their fundamental human rights and how to exercise them responsibly.
The program, led by the Zonal President of NAS, Hon. Olaniyi Abiodun, featured a keynote lecture by Barrister Justina Akeredolu, who highlighted the significance of rights such as life, education, dignity, and safety. She urged students to voice out against harassment and oppression, emphasizing the importance of using appropriate channels like the police, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, and civil rights organizations to report violations.
Barrister Akeredolu also advised against misinterpreting rights as a license for disrespect or misconduct, particularly towards parents and teachers during disciplinary actions. She cautioned students to avoid criminal acts that could tarnish their dignity and future, stressing the sanctity of human life and the consequences of acts like murder or suicide.
Supporting Education and Humanitarianism
Addressing the students, Hon. Olaniyi Abiodun, an alumnus of the school, underscored the importance of alumni contributing to their alma maters’ development. He announced monetary rewards for outstanding students across various levels and pledged to mobilize support for improving the school’s infrastructure.
Engr. Chuks Ejimofor, former Zonal President, provided insight into the association’s history and objectives. NAS(A.K.A Pyrates Confraternity) founded by seven University of Ibadan students under the leadership of Prof. Wole Soyinka, has been a longstanding advocate for justice and humanitarianism, with 64 Decks worldwide.
He reaffirmed NAS’s commitment to supporting vulnerable groups and promoting societal betterment. Highlighting the organization’s integrity, he explained that membership is reserved for graduates with NYSC discharge certificates.
Encouraging Positive Growth
The second Vice-President of the Ondo/Ekiti Deck, Mr. Eyitemi Onome Egbi, urged students to reflect on the lecture, focus on academics, and assist their peers. He emphasized that such sensitization programs are conducted globally across NAS chapters to enrich minds and create awareness about rights and responsibilities.
A Call for Collaboration
Representing the school’s Principal, Mrs. Adeleye, the Vice Principal (Administration) expressed gratitude to NAS for choosing the school for the program. She appealed for continued advocacy and infrastructural support to enhance students’ academic and moral development.
With the theme “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now,” the program reaffirmed NAS’s dedication to fostering a society that values justice, education, and human dignity.
