25 suspects have been apprehended in Sunday’s disturbances that led to the plundering of a store belonging to the national emergency management agency (NEMA).
In the commotion that engulfed the city, many young hoodlums hijacked the protest and turned their crude weapons into private homes of comfortable residents and plundered their kitchens and bedrooms in their trail.
Consequently, a task force was established to enforce the ongoing stop and search by security agents by enforcing a- 24 hour curfew in the Adamawa state capital Yola.
Police Public Relation Officer Suleiman Ngoroje told this reporter that lots of food and non food items looted were recovered from the suspects.
He said that the situation has been brought under Control by men of the Nigerian police force who are working with a taskforce team to enforce the 24hrs curfew imposed in Yola and the entire state.
Fintiri Declares 24 Hour Curfew
Meanwhile Governor Ahmadu Fintiri has declared a 24-hour curfew on the state, effective from Sunday 30th July, 2023.
Fintiri said the curfew followed the dangerous dimension the activities of hoodlums had assumed across the state capital as they attacked people with machete and broke into business premises and homes carting away properties.
With the curfew imposed, there will be no movement throughout the state until further notice said a release from government house.
Fintiri said only those on essential duties with valid identification would be permitted to move around during the period of the curfew.
“The Governor is appealing to citizens and residents of the state to comply with the directive, adding that any person found contravening the order would be arrested and made to face the wrath of the law.
“The development followed looting of warehouses by residents, who carted assorted foodstuffs and other valuables under guise of looking for ‘palliatives’.
” Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Humwashi Wonosikou, in the release made available to newsmen on Sunday afternoon, said the curfew takes effect immediately.
The state of Adamawa is in high tension with the elections tribunal yet to decide the rightful owner of the governorship mandate after the February elections in which business woman Aisha Binani of the All Progressive Congress (APC) contested with incumbent Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in a keen election.
Some residents also posit that the APC governorship candidate won but was denied her mandate because of mundane sentiments that a woman cannot be allowed to manage a conservative state in which the Paramount ruler and Fulani Lamido of Adamawa will have to bow before her excellency.
This is also not the first time looting of food and non food items is taking place in Adamawa state by the common masses.
Reliable sources told this reporter that the governor had actually planned to commence the sharing of the foodstuffs to people, public or private with effect from this month.
