Int’l Day for street Children: Expert seeks enforcement of Child Rights Law

Chief Executive Officer, Save the Future of Children Initiative, Mr Oyedeji Olufemi, has called for the effective implementation and enforcement of the Child Rights Law in the country.

Olufemi made the call on Sunday in Ilorin, in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in commemoration of the 2026 International Day for Street Children.

The theme of the day is “Access to Justice: Protect, Not Punish” .

The International Day for Street Children is observed annually on April 12 to advocate for the rights, protection, and opportunities of millions of street-connected children worldwide.

Launched by the Consortium for Street Children (CSC) in 2011, it highlights their resilience and raises awareness about issues like lack of healthcare, education, and legal protection.

Quoting a report by streetchildren.org,
Olufemi observed that there are an estimated 100 million children connected to the streets globally.

He stated that in Nigeria about 10.5 million children are connected to the streets; one of the highest figures globally.

According to him, this figure paints a troubling picture of a world that neglects its most precious assets, who are the hope of nations and the promise of the future.

“Every child deserves the warmth and protection of a home. Yet, for millions of children, the streets have become their reality due to circumstances far beyond their understanding or control.

“These children are exposed daily to violence, exploitation, and danger, living without the care, guidance, or protection of responsible adults.

“Society often turns a blind eye, acting as though these children do not matter or are undeserving of a better life,” he said.

Olufemi pointed out that across Nigerian cities, street children beg for alms, washing vehicle windscreens, and struggling to survive.

He lamented that these vulnerable group face each day without hope, no access to education, food, shelter, or protection.

Olufemi reiterates the unwavering commitment of the Save the Future of Children Initiative in promoting and protecting the rights of every Nigerian child.

“No child deserves to live or survive on the streets. Every child belongs in a family.

“Every child deserves to be in school, learning, growing, and thriving, not begging for survival,” he said.
