SWS Celebrates Good Leadership in Women Empowerment

…Honours Past State Chairpersons

The Ondo State chapter of the StandUp for Women Society (SWS) has celebrated its past State Chairpersons for their contributions to sustaining the society’s mission of empowering women in the state.

The event, which was held recently in Akure, honoured its foundation Chairperson, Lib. Victoria Akpatamu, and two of her successors, Lib. Jaiyeola Olubunmi and Lib. Olusola Babalola.

Speaking at the occasion, the incumbent State Chairperson of the Society, Lib. Rafat Momoh, praised the past leaders for their dedication, describing their tenure as foundational to the society’s continued success.

“We are standing tall today because of the visionary leadership and tireless efforts of the women who came before us. Today is not just a celebration; it’s a reminder of our responsibility to build on their legacy,” Momoh said.

Two of the three honourees present at the occasion, Lib. Olubunmi Jaiyeola and Lib. Olusola Babalola both received plaques in recognition of their leadership and service, and expressed happiness and satisfaction at the honour.

In her response, Jaiyeola, a seasoned nurse and administrator who currently serves as Deputy Director of Nursing at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, appreciated the gesture initiated by the current leadership of the organisation.

According to her citation, Jaiyeola is a specialist in midwifery, public health, and nephrology, and is currently pursuing a PhD in Nursing. A devout Christian and mother, she is widely travelled and actively involved in various professional and faith-based groups.

“She is a woman of passion, discipline, and relentless service,” the citation read.

She further stated, “This recognition touches me deeply. Alhaja Rafat has shown uncommon leadership and warmth. Even though we practise different faiths, her compassion unites us.”

While recalling the challenges she faced during her tenure, Jaiyeola said, “At one point, it felt like the society would collapse. But by God’s grace, I handed over a thriving baby, which has since been transformed by the present Chairperson.”

The immediate past Chairperson, Lib. Olusola Babalola, described the recognition as unexpected, revealing that she had earlier requested its cancellation due to the economic challenges currently facing Nigeria.

She also recalled the process of appointing Lib. Rafat Momoh as State Chairperson, noting that she has never disappointed them since assuming leadership.

The event ended with prayers, tributes, and a renewed pledge to advance the society’s mission of empowering women across the state and beyond.
